An odious schedule change in the offing for (IVC) F&M classified?

Generally popular among faculty
Since late July, we’ve been hearing about proposed changes—namely, changes in classified working hours/schedule—allegedly being proposed by IVC’s Facilities Director, John Edwards
These changes are obviously unpopular with some or all (IVC Facilities and Maintenance) classified.
For instance, on the 28th of July, I received an email from a classified employee that requested that I read a forwarded email from an individual [I won’t identify him or her] to IVC’s Ac. Senate Prez, KS. It was dated July 25:
Kathy, … I am [X], the ___, and we have a situation that will affect the campus as a whole and I am hoping for your support…. As you probably know, the campus (and district [?] …) are trying to make a change to all classified, [namely,] go to hour long lunches. This is an inconvenience and [is unwanted] by most of the classified staff.

[With this,] John Edwards is changing our present schedule from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm ([previously,] he … changed it from 6:00 am - 2:30 pm …) to 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. [You should know] How this will affect the campus, students and you, the faculty….:

[1] The grounds people will not be able to clean the parking lots because cars will be [in the way];
[2] they will be mowing and using other loud machinery during class time, … around classrooms….;
[3] …chances of hitting someone … with rocks and other flying debris [when the weed eater is used and students are present] increases greatly.
[4] Most all of us will be working now through the hottest part of the day and longer through the heat, increasing the chances for heat stroke [and] other heat related illnesses.
[5] We will not be able to service locks, doors, A/C, heat, carpentry and plumbing needs,... because the classrooms will be occupied.

…[W]e had a power outage last night [July 24?], which affected the automated locks, HVAC units and fire/life safety systems and we jumped on it and had most of the systems going by 8, but some didn’t get back on line until after 10:30 am, because for now we [have a] 7-3:30 schedule. [Were Edwards' proposed schedule in place,] we would not have even started dealing with [these problems] until after 8 and after the student & faculty has arrived and occupied the classrooms and offices. …[W]ould you want students or yourself in a hot room with no A/C?...

Our union reps are trying to help out but we could really use the backing of [others]. The change is supposed to take effect on August 11th. So time is critical. If you can speak to your senate and colleagues we would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for your time, X
I did not respond to this email, preferring to wait to see how things developed (though the Reb and I did forward the email to some union leadership).
Meanwhile, three comments, evidently related to this matter, have appeared here on DtB:

HAS ANYBODY HEARD THE CHANGES JOHN EDWARDS IS [imposing on] THE EMPLOYEES IN F&M[?] IF YOU HAVE [TO,] GO … AROUND AND ASK
Anonymous - 5:55 PM, July 31, 2014
Just heard about it today. Evidently John has issued an edict and changed many of the F&M staff starting times. Staff have to come in at 8:00 am. [You’d] better hope you don't need anything set up before then[!] Also, [he provided?] a rather strongly worded paragraph about not arriving early or staying more than 15 minutes before or after working hours. Those not obeying … Edwards would be subject to consequences. Never mind all the employees and the families he is impacting[!] Evidently the civility and mutual respect mantra does not apply to John. Hey Glenn (oops, [I mean] Davit …) wake up and do something!

Here's a great thing John wants to do to the hardworking employees of facilities and maintenance. Change their hours to 8-5! When [will] the parking lots be cleaned? You want the groundsmen to sweat it out in the 95 degree heat at 4 in the afternoon? Do you think vendors want to arrive after 8 am to install hvac equipment? LoL  No! … The health and safety issues are too numerous to mention here. If you need late afternoon and evening coverage, fill out a resource form like the rest of us stiffs. Good luck with all of the special events and classes that begin at 7 or 8. No one will be around to help[!]
—As usual, we'd love to hear from the "other side" about all of this. Are the objections noted above all valid? What are the alleged advantages of this change that might outweigh these problems, if they are valid? Etc.
The Facilities and Maintenance area has long been troubled by tensions between workers and management. Such difficulties predate Mr. Edwards' arrival as Director (previously, he headed A&R; he switched to heading F&M, c. 2008, taking over from the notorious Wayne Ward). But they have persisted during his tenure as well. Edwards is regarded, by some, as a part of the core group of "bullies" that seem to run IVC.
Workers have tended to complain about autocratic management, unfair actions, arbitrary changes, violations of contract, etc.

Somebody has to tell the truth about EDWARDS. John is a hazer and likes to retaliate. Instead of John dealing with the one person he may have a problem with he will take it out on the department. John likes to get everyone in trouble so that they will be upset at the one person he is dealing with. John likes to send his Linch men after employees.

John and Wayne Ward have some similarities. I heard Wayne had his WEE which was his rules the department had to follow but the union squash it. John has his office policies I think the union needs to investigate.

They are forcing classified employees to work an 8:00-5:00 shift? They are also forcing them to take an hour lunch with two 15 minute breaks? Has someone contacted their labor relations board?

That attitude above is exactly the problem many F & M workers face - people who sit in their air-conditioned offices and do not recognize the nature of the labor that keeps the campus working. It's insulting and disrespectful and what we have sadly come to expect from too many.

Roquemore and Davit are wrapped around John's finger. Get used to it Maintenance Crew!

I have noticed serious disturbances while teaching summer session. Every Monday, for the past three weeks, the maintenance staff has mowed the lawn by my classroom and sometimes even hosed off the windows. It has completely drowned out class discussions or my voice. I haven't noticed this in previous semesters.

Get used to it maintenance crew! John is untouchable

I laugh at that him not being touchable..he is touchable he just hasn't been touched by the right person.

Why does it seem that everyone is scared of John Edwards. Does he not go to the restroom like everyone else, doesn't he need to shower like everyone else, doesn't he get scared like everyone else, doesn't he have attitude like everyone else. He is just a man who thinks he has backing but people who are smart will soon to realize they need to separate themselves from this cancer in Facilities.

I think john being smack over the head with a skateboard, affected his brain, he lives in a different world, Wayne's World.... He thinks his Wayne Ward!!!!

This is the place to let out your frustration on EDWARDS. I know without a doubt somebody has emails of John's temper and the way he comes across. Now is the time to release respectfully of course. Fear can be like a chain that keeps you bound. You will never progress if fear of John controls you.

Yes, respectfully.

I so enjoy the work and professionalism of our Facilities and Maintenance staff. It is an amazing group of folks that have transformed a college and done so under the leadership of John Edwards. They create, they sweat, they repair, they mend and they clean and are never given the real credit they deserve. Never. I also enjoy watching a tiny group of classified employees who are perfectly fine as long as they are comfortable-fine as long as the sun is shining on them-fine as long as the cool breeze is in their direction as they drive about campus chatting with their friends. They are charming folks indeed and will do anything to maintain the comfort they feel is due them. They now scream of "safety concerns" and "set up concerns" and how the campus will suffer. Have no illusions. In their view, the sun is not shining in their face today and the cool breeze is moving in another direction and they are not happy. Its about them. If this were a small group of proven caring professionals who had a track record of standing by their colleagues no matter the price and did the right thing because it was the honorable thing to do, I might not have shared this view. Too often when others are under fire college wide, they are no where to be found. Its about them, their needs and their comfort and little else. In what I know of Mr. Edwards, he is opinionated, a perfectionist and can be difficult to work. He demands far too much of his staff at times but demands twice as much from himself. If concerned, be concerned about matters that count and matters that hold meaning professionally and make this institution better. In my view, an 8:00-5:00 shift just doesn't cut rise to that level. It might be helpful to ask a community of unemployed citizens about what they think of this situation. I beg of all of you reading these posts, to continue your compliments of the Facilities and Maintenance staff simply because its the right thing to do and its deserved. They all deserve praise and that includes John Edwards.

The entire F&M needs an overhaul.

4:43, you are ignoring the specific claims made by those who object to the new schedule. Respond to those.

heard that f&m ex-manager gave evaluations to some employees before he went back to his old job and that the employees and manager had already signed them but JE would not sign them, that he wanted to reevaluate those employees in his own way.(And people think that there isnt a problem in the head of that department)people you make your manager look good or bad

I haven't heard or read the reason JE wants to make the change in hours. Is there some compelling reason for this that benefits the department or college?

Anonymous said...

The reason that John wants to change the hours of F&M is because (according to john) the neighbors are complaining of the noise of the motorcycles make in the morning is keeping them awake! There's tree F&M workers that ride motorcycles, why not talk to this tree workers, and problem solve? Why take it out on all the F&M workers.... This is not the Army!!!!

Anonymous said...

If the reason is because of there bikes why not just ask them to bring in there cars instead. PRO LET SOLVED.

Anonymous said...

LET'S NOT FORGET WHY JOHN, ENDED UP ON THE F&M DEPARTMENT. HE WAS TRANFERED BY THE PRESIDENT OF IVC TO F&M, AFTER HE PUT HIS HAND ON A STUDENT WHEN HE WAS AT A&R, INTEAD OF BEING DICIPLINE, HE WAS KEPT AWAY FROM HAVING ANY CONTACT WITH ANY SRUDENT. THERE WAS A REPORT INCIDENT TAKEN BY POLICE OFFICER VICKY STEVENS, I'M SURE THE IVC POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS IT ON THEIR FILES....

Anonymous said...

This sounds highly unlikely.

Anonymous said...

Seriously 7:11pm you think that if someone rides a legal motorcycle to work and someone complains they should be required to drive a car? What is they don't own a car? Should they be required to ride the bus? The neighbors in the apartments own motorcycles (and loud cars too) should the college complain that they make noise and distract students???

I have never seen John lose a fight.. And I am certain that will never happen. He is too clever, the way he strategizes is amazing. Good luck maintenance crew.

11:40 you seem to have a lot of confidence IN JOHN EDWARDS.

Anonymous said...

9:11 I woke up and decided to check the blog on my way to the kitchen to see your response. Don't be the thread that tears the fabric. Looks like 7:11 was being sympathetic to there situation by saying all John had to do instead of changing hours was ask people to drive there cars. If they all have cars then that ends the problem but for bike riders I can see how the summer is a great time to ride. Do your readers a favor and the maintenance read, analyze and make good judgements on theses post and don't be quick to get upset. Division is an enemy of people trying to get things accomplished.

YOU ARE PRETTY SURE OF YOURSELF JOHN

I suppose everyone on campus might have one issue or another in regards to their particular schedule. An objection to a schedule alone is meaningless. I do believe it is a valid concern that there will be one hour where staff will not have access to empty classrooms. On the other hand, if I have a problem in my class while it is in session it seems that I have an additional hour and a half to seek assistance and receive assistance. This seems a plus. The classified in my department, and most classified, work an 8:00-5:00 shift since those are the college's ideal working hours, why would the facilities department want to be treated differently than other classified professionals? Why 8:00-5:00 is a fair question but why not 8:00-5:00 is also a fair question it seems.

People can drive/ride whatever they want. Nobody has the right to order or even ask them to change. The neighbors, know they live next to a college. They chose to buy or rent there. They expect silence and nothing but birds chirping? Ridiculous!! Poor excuse for any sort of action nor do I expect this is the reason. John merely wants to remind everyone he is in charge. Doesn't matter who it hurts or helps. Once an OCD control freak, always an OCD control freak.
John, do the right thing and knock this crap off. Grow old gracefully, not bitterly and angry.

This is completely truthful, I heard the same from F&M employees.

I heard at Orage Coast College the employees were able to grade their Director...Union what do you thunk.
